Audi
Bloomteq partners with Audi to modernize legacy infrastructure within the Audi Workbench - migrating WebSphere services to modern architectures, replacing the legacy TEFID system with real-time search and tracking capabilities via Quarkus and OpenSearch, and leading cloud infrastructure migration to OpenShift, all with zero disruption to Audi's core operations.
“Because we cannot be experts in everything, we build systems that make the right expertise easier to find, trust, and scale.”
Introduction
At Bloomteq, we partner with Audi to design and implement robust infrastructure solutions that power critical quality assurance processes within the Audi Workbench. As part of the ongoing Workbench Modernisation Project, we are modernizing legacy systems to enhance performance, scalability, and integration across Audi’s engineering landscape. Our team leads the migration of critical application infrastructure between cloud providers, ensuring seamless continuity and minimal disruption to Audi’s core operations.
Challenge and Scope
Audi's digital ecosystem required modernization across several interconnected areas, each presenting distinct technical and operational challenges: Legacy System Modernization - Multiple legacy services running on WebSphere required migration to modern architectures without service disruption. - An aging vehicle data system (TEFID) needed to be replaced with a high-performance, real-time search and tracking infrastructure. - Manual processes for data import/export across Oracle databases and target environments created operational bottlenecks. Search and Tracking Performance - The existing car search capability lacked the performance and real-time update capability required for Audi's scale. - Vehicle status monitoring required a modern interface and efficient data handling to replace the outdated TEFID-based system. Security and Authentication - The existing authentication layer required modernization to meet current security standards, including token-based access and role management. Cloud and Infrastructure Migration - Critical application infrastructure needed to be migrated between cloud providers with zero downtime and full continuity of service. - New OpenShift-based deployment infrastructure was required to support modernized services at scale.
Approach, Solution and Outcome
Approach
Bloomteq conducted a comprehensive assessment of Audi's existing platform landscape, mapping legacy service dependencies, data flows, and infrastructure requirements. The team established a modernization strategy that prioritized incremental replacement of legacy components, ensuring zero disruption to Audi's operational systems throughout. A cloud-native, containerized deployment approach using OpenShift was selected to provide the scalability and resilience required for enterprise-grade operations. In accordance with German engineering standards, every phase was planned, executed, and documented with precision to ensure full traceability and transparency.
Solution
Car Search Optimization Service - Developed a high-performance car search service using Quarkus and OpenSearch. - Extracts vehicle data from the legacy TEFID system, uploads it in JSON format to AWS S3, and performs daily synchronization into OpenSearch. - Supports real-time updates by listening to changes in the TEFID system and immediately reflecting them in the new search index. Vehicle Tracking System - Implemented a new vehicle tracking service using Quarkus for the backend and ReactJS for the frontend. - Migrated data from the TEFID system to a PostgreSQL database via S3. - Provides a modern interface and efficient data handling for vehicle status monitoring. Import/Export Services - Developed multiple Quarkus-based services for exporting selected tables from Oracle databases to S3 and importing them into target databases. - Streamlined data migration and synchronization across environments. User Authentication System - Implemented a modern authentication layer with secure token-based authentication and role management through newly created REST endpoints. - Improved both security posture and user management capabilities across the platform. Legacy Services Modernization - Upgraded 4-5 legacy Java EE services running on WebSphere to modern architectures using OpenLiberty. - Designed new REST APIs, created DTOs and mappers, and implemented integration tests to ensure a smooth transition. Infrastructure Setup for OpenShift Deployment - Set up new infrastructure for multiple services using OpenShift, incorporating Chartmogul for service management and deployment tracking. Platform Migration Tasks - Completed various tasks focused on migrating functionalities from the legacy platform to the new environment, including email service migration and other functionality porting to ensure full compatibility and continuity.
